Lombardy, Italy Located on the Swiss border at the base of the Alps, the citizens of this most populous and well-to-do region are better noted as consumers than producers of wine. Still, even though output is much less than that of neighboring Veneto, Emilia-Romagna and Piedmont, Lombardians do make some fine wine, a growing share of which is truly excellent. Good wines are made in the provinces of Bergamo, Mantova and even Milano, but the prize for quality and variety goes to Brescia, which boasts a majority of the region’s DOC/DOCGs: Botticino, Capriano del Colle, Cellatica, Franciacorta, Terre di Franciacorta, Garda Bresciano, San Martino della Battaglia and two zones that share territory with Veneto: Garda and Lugana. The white Lugana, which compares with Soave Classico in class, has been growing in stature. The Superiore reds of Valtellina are among the most austere of Nebbiolos, due to the coolness of the terraced mountain vineyards, so steep in places that grapes are hauled in with baskets on cables. But the apparent lightness is deceptive, for some have the strength and stamina to improve for well over a decade. (Link) Provenza Lugana Colli Storici, 2010, Lombardy, Italy The Azienda Agricola Provenza agricultural estate was established thanks to a long-standing family tradition and a great passion for wine. The company was founded in 1967 by Walter Contato, who sadly passed away in 1996, it is now run by his children Fabio and Patrizia Contato who have followed in his footsteps with the same enthusiasm and renewed professionalism. The Wine: This superb white wine is produced from hand selected Lugana and Trebbiano grapes and takes its name from Cascina Maiolo, the vineyard founded in 1710. The wine has a characteristic straw colour with light green highlights, delicate bouquet of fresh fruit and almonds. Delicate, mineral and fresh, with fragrances of white almonds and apple. The perfect wine to be served chilled with shellfish starters, creamy pasta and risotto.
Pietro Nera Rosso di Valtellina, 2006, Lombardy, Italy Valtellina is a wine region in the mountainous north of Lombardy, northern Italy. The area has been producing high quality wines for over 2000 years. All Valtellina wines are made from Nebbiolo grapes, which are known here by the name Chiavennasca. Just as Piedmont prides itself on rich Nebbiolo reds, Valtellina has a close relationship with its Chiavennasca, named after the nearby mountain town of Chiavenna. The two are in fact precisely the same grape variety, and although the name Nebbiolo holds significantly greater prestige and renown in the wine world, the Valtellina wine community are proudly holding on to their Chiavennasca. (More...) The Wine: Made with 90% Chiavennasca and 10% Pignola e Rossola. Brilliant ruby red color, delicate bouquet, persistant and characteristic, dry taste, spirited and slightly tannic, tea leaf and cherry.
