Is that you June?… we missed ya
sump’n fierce! .COM on!
I could go on an on about the weather… yup, it’s
awesome! But I have something much more
important to bring forth to you, my peeps. Starting
May 1, 2011, we began a new Pilot Program with an
existing WOM member, this one entitled .COM -
Case of the Month Club. Essentially it’s a case of 4
mixed wines (3 bottles each) at a higher price point
than WOM, billed every other month. If this is
something you would like to discuss in more detail, .
COM and see me!
Las Colinas del Ebro Blanca, 2009,
Terra Alta, Spain
Las Colinas del Ebro are a new line of wines inspired
by the high altitude vines near the river Ebro, one of
the great rivers of Europe and a profound influence
on the landscape and history of northern Spain. This
area is now a hot-spot for quality wine production
and gastronomic creativity. The team responsible for
these new wines are managing director of Bodegas
Abanico, Rafael de Haan and technical director of
Celler Batea, Luis Martin. They believe that the D.O.
Terra Alta has a bright future as a region for quality
wines. They believe that rigorous care of vineyards
and small yields of flavorful grapes yields wines that
meet the high standards they require.
The Wine: 100% Garnacha Blanca - First produced
in 2006, the wine is made from 100 year old
Garnacha Blanca vines grown in Terra Alta. Fruit
was hand harvested, de-stemmed and lightly
crushed prior to pressing. The must was cold-settled
and a portion of must that had been macerated with
the skins for 12 hours was added prior to
fermentation for additional complexity. Fermented
in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks.
“Bright straw. Laid-back aromas of yellow apple,
pear, melon and lemon thyme. Silky and modestly
concentrated, with fine-grained honeydew and pear
flavors and a light kiss of herbs. Tightly wound for
the variety, finishing with good bite and lingering
herbacity.” Stephen Tanzer, 88 Points
Quinta das Maias Red, 2007,
Dao, Portugal
Located in the Dao, In the northern center of
Portugal. The Dão DOC in the Bieras Wine
Region is one of the country’s oldest and most
famous wine regions, dating back to Roman
times.
Quinta das Maias was Part of the family owned
and operated wine estates of Quinta dos
Roques and Quinta do Correio, until 1997. The
Winery comprises 86 contiguous acres at an
elevation of 1500 to 1800 feet in the foothills of
the Serra da Estrela mountains, providing
excellent daily temperature variation for
ripening the 5-30 year old vines.
None other than Jancis Robinson, one of the
most well respected critics working today, has
referred to this estate as "the Margaux of
Portugal."
The Wine: Touriga Nacional blended with a
rather new grape to me, Jaen, which upon
further research I have found to be the
Portuguese alias for Mencia. Recently purchased
by neighboring estate Quinta dos Roques, this
is delicious, mid-weight wine that is
reminiscent of the Ribera Sacra across the
border in Spain. A bit funky and earthy on the
nose, with red fruits and some mushroom, the
wine shows a terrific mouth filling yet fresh red
fruited quality, reflecting its comparably higher
altitude vineyard orientation. It is quite
persistent, with an appealing mineral vein
running through the wine.
Try these wines with the following
suggestions.
Las Colinas del Ebro Blanca, 2009, Terra
Alta, Spain
Peach Salsa
Curries Cashew, Pear, and Grape Salad
Quinta das Maias Red, 2007, Dao, Portugal

Cheers!!
